  • Half A$$ Trailer Reno

As mentioned on the winter project thread I am doing a light reno job to my Haul Rite POS adjustable trailer. Last year I put in new bearings and seals and checked the brakes, which were good. So it's in good condition mechanically. Just butt ugly. So here's a reminder of the before.

Got some thick gray automotive primer and went to work. Before doing this I hit some of the heavier rust areas with some stuff called rust converter. Brushed it on and the rust turned black. Supposedly this is good. I guess time will tell. Some primer pics....

Next I used truck bed liner to the underside cross members and to the bottoms of all of the sides.

Got some diamond plate for the fenders. Just had black rubber there before and noting on the tops. I added sandpaper type stair treads to it just to cover some of the rust. Cut the diamond plate and test fitted. Added second coat of red afterwards.

Views underneath of the truck bed coat and the red. In the first pic is the first cross member under the bow. It is red on top and facing forward and is black underneath and on the rear facing side. That is kind of where it transitions underneath. The second two pics are from the rear.

Attached the diamond plate with SS screws. Decided to redo the front triangles. They seemed too small. Will attach those later.

Reinstalled the winch stand which I took off and painted at home. Added a new winch and strap to it. Also removed the old rusty safety chains and replaced them with vinyl covered cables.

I know the finish is not smooth but it's nice and thick. As I said before, I had no place to put the boat so I had to do this with it on the trailer with small paint rollers. Still have to add the small triangle diamond plate to the front of the fenders and reinstall the lights which I am upgrading to LEDs. I also have some large silver Chaparral decals to add to the sides. Hopefully the paint won't fall off when I dunk it in the water....

Thanks Joey. Hoping to add enough bling to take the focus off of the textured paint. Not sure how the decals will stick to the texture. I know they will look textured, too. I will just be happy if they stick. Found these on ebay.

Putting the bird heads on the fenders and the lettering on the rails just ahead of them.

Thanks Mike. I was kicking around getting a nice new Eagle Trailer but the fact that this thing has been so mechanically dependable led me to doing this.
