  • Finally, a job I can call a career

The past few years have been rocky for me...substitute teaching for k-12, fixing cars on the side, renovated an entire house. Basically, didn't have a steady paycheck. I've been trying to get hired into law enforcement for the past 3 years with no luck. In April this year, I accepted a job with the Wisconsin Dept of Corrections as a Correctional Officer. At the time it wasn't exactly what I wanted, but I've grown to really enjoy it. There's TONS of opportunity for advancement, as much overtime as I want to take, the benefits are good, and I actually look forward to going to work everyday. It may sound funny, but I had actually forgotten what it was like to receive a paycheck every two weeks!

Congrats!! And appreciate what you do!! Its one thing putting up with the criminals out on the streets but another once they're all together!

My father was in law enforcement for 28 yrs. I always wanted to be a cop, hit the ground running hard when I turned 21 but gave up after 2-3 yrs of frustration.

Now I'm proud to say I work for the world's largest public safety provider!! Again, congrats on the career!

Starting to think it's time to go back to Law Enforcement myself, I'm getting real tired of not getting paid regularly and its really putting a strain on my limited financial situation. My wife and I talked about it last night in fact, and for the first time she is actually for it so who knows I may have a new job title in the next year too, Sheriff's Deputy Lippolis.....not sure if that sounds good or not!!

Happy for you Brian, I envy you!!

                Chris-
I'm not sure what it's like on Colorado, but in Wisconsin, it's extremely difficult to get hired into law enforcement without an inside connection. I'm hoping this position in corrections can get me into L.E. eventually. I still want to work L.E more than corrections.

Yeah I hear you and it is very tough here as well.....

But I have that inside connection thankfully, just have to wait for the opening

Hey guys I haven't been around much so I figured I would update, The Ole family company DID in fact go under, sad but it happens.

Currently I'm in the Process at the Sheriff's Office, Finished the Initial phase and now things get serious, Today I passed my Integrity Interview, Next week I will have my Polygraph and Psychological exams, both of these have me all wound up, after that is my Physical Exam and then Sheriff's Interview which will be easy for me. Hopefully I will start as a Detentions Specialist in February, after a year I will go to the Academy, then another year as Jail Deputy and then I can test to get out on the street.

Congratulations on your job. It'll be very hard to see a lay off in that kind of employment.

I work for the for the Federal Bureau of Prison, and is nice. I worked as an officer for 7 1/2 years before I got promoted and now I'm monday thru friday, weekends and holidays off.

You, having teaching background, should look into going that route where you're at, or better yet, go work for the Feds, you'll be glad you did. If you need any advise or have any questions, let me know.

                            Best of luck.

Were understaffed right now anyway so any cutbacks aren't likely, we got our budget approved without review, this Sheriff has his stuff together, and the final part of my hiring is a Sheriff interview which ironically has already been done!LOL We have cutback but its been through attrition and right now we are hiring but its to keep current levels on the road. I'm going to start at Detention Specialist a non sworn position but after a year they will pay for me to goto the Academy so thats a plus. The Sheriff asked me what I want to do, I didn't hesitate in telling him what ever you need me to do, he really liked that, a little brown nosing never hurt anyone did it?

                              Any Polygraph advice?
