  • Cobalt Boats compound choice.

If anyone was looking for a product to polish their boat, I have it on good authority that Cobalt uses a 3M product 06026 https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-...3241315&rt=rud

I personally have never used the stuff, but it must be good if Cobalt uses it! And no, I have no affiliation with Cobalt or 3M, just had the info come across my desk and I thought I would share.

I wish you could buy it in a quantity of less than 1 gallon. Maybe I just wasn't able to find a website selling it in smaller size quantities.

I'm gathering the 06026 is the 50lb can and the 06025 is the 10lb can. Still, a lot of polish though...

Not a polish. That's a heavy cut aggressive compound.

Some paperwork came to me from 3m by mistake . They (Cobalt) had ordered (2) 50lb containers of the stuff.

I have never been a 3M fan for gelcoat. Any product line can give you great results, just a matter of personal preference and what works best with your technique. Technique is key. I have had the opportunity to use just about every brand product doing all of Bald Mike's work.

I first started with 3M years ago, as auto body friends of mine had always used it. Got so so results.

Tried Aqua Buff and got better results, but found it hard to work with.

              Mothers and Mequires OK.

Used Wizzards for many years and like their products.

              Leverage OK.

Performance Boat Candy one of my favorites.

Have always liked Presta SuperCut for heavy oxidation and scratches for a 1st step. Was running low on Performance Boat Candy and wanted to try the whole Presta line.

Completed a Black 242 Cobalt of Mike's last night. This boat had some dcok rash that was repaired and lots of scratches. I first used Presta SuperCut and a heavy wool compounding pad. Then Chroma Ultra Polish and a blended wool polishing pad followed with Chroma Swirl Remover and a black foam finishing pad. Presta has their own pads as well, but I used the equivalent pads I already have. Very easy to work with. I found my new favorite!!!!!!!!!!!!

The results are absolutely stunning. The last photo is the black boat, not a mirror boys! BTW, boat will be listed soon if anyone is interested in a beautiful fresh water Cobalt.

Very nice! I might have to try some of that. How does the finish coat hold up under UV? I buffed my whole boat with Wizards and it turned out nice. A few months later I used Meguires flagship wax on top of it but still see a lot of haze within a week on the lake. The haze goes away with another coat of the wax but it would be nice if it didn't appear so quickly. How is PBC for a finish wax? I have their speed gloss and like it a lot.

Boat has not been waxed yet. PBC is my top choice of wax. I have used many waxes over the years as well, and I would have a tough time to switch to anything else, as it is the easiest to apply and remove and offers the best protection I have seen yet. I can wax my entire 38' boat, minus deck and transom in just under an hour.

As far as the Cobalt holding up under UV, it has nothing to do with the compounds, but the wax protection.

FWIW I have found Mequires Flagship to be one of the worst waxes I ever used. My old boat, 1996 Crownline 266LTD Spinal Wine was a very difficult color to keep nice. I used Flagship, as it was highly recommended by someone here many may years ago, after a 3-stage compound/buff/and polish and had the same hazing issues. I gave the remainder of that bottle away!

Cory, which PBC wax do you use? are there multiple ones? Have you tried or heard of anyone using Chemical Guys products? That is all I will use on my cars, but haven't tried them on the boat yet. I also use the Presta compound and polish and really like them. works well and does a great job in my opinion.

Crystal Gloss is the only wax they have last i checked, unless you are referring to some of their spray on products.

Thanks Cory, I’ll put my flagship wax at the back of the cabinet and order some PBC Crystal Gloss for next spring. My boat is Spinal Wine as well and it sounds like I have the same issues you dealt with on yours. The color is sharp but the sun really beats it up in a hurry.
